About Me
Dr Austin Floyd is a father, a teacher and a community advocate. Throughout his life, he’s consistently found ways to make the greatest impact for the most underserved and has held positions across the Sumter, Columbia, Lee and Camden communities. Dr. Floyd currently serves as the 2024-2025 Teacher of The Year at Sumter Adult Education helping adults in Lee and Sumter counties earn their GED or high school diploma. He worked full-time for the South Carolina Technical College System for a decade expanding access to workforce and technical certification opportunities for rural and suburban communities. Dr. Floyd understands the importance of having a skilled workforce already in place to capitalize on the growing demands of industry and increase the per capita income of our communities.
Dr. Floyd’s background begins in K12 education, extends to technical college education, but also includes a Doctor of Education degree in Higher Education Leadership. He teaches part-time in Benedict College’s Business department at Broad River Correctional Facility. He understands the value of requiring accountability from criminal offenders while also providing rehabilitative opportunities that are mutually beneficial to the community. Dr. Floyd will invest in local communities to reduce crime and enhance education and infrastructure. In fact, Dr. Floyd has worked with hundreds of youth locally from disadvantaged backgrounds over the last 8 years. He understands that infrastructure investments help spur further economic opportunities and has a plan to strategically and collaboratively allocate funding to our region.
Dr. Floyd is a former Student Government Association President at SC State University, the 3rd Vice Chair for the Sumter County Democratic Party, the 2022 Most Outstanding Technical College Professional, a 2023 graduate of Leadership Columbia, a 2024 Clyburn Fellow and the proud Father of Ethan Floyd. As a single dad, Austin puts his son’s education and well-being first. He understands the implications of building a brighter future for our children and preparing them for a world that they will one day run. Dr Floyd comes from humble beginnings and will make bold investments in under-resourced and historic communities. Dr Floyd’s motto is that if you seek first the kingdom of God and all his righteousness, all things will be added unto you. Dr Floyd serves on several local boards throughout the region to include Midlands Fatherhood Coalition (an organization that increases fatherhood involvement and resources) and Turning Pages (a literacy organization that has taught over 6000 adults in Columbia how to read). Dr. Floyd has planned and coordinated Get Out The Vote events with the Sumter County Democratic Party and registers nearly 125 new voters each year.
Dr. Floyd has a bold plan to enhance economic development, invest in local communities, improve education, and serve military-affiliated families. Dr. Austin B. Floyd Jr. is running for Senate District 35 because he believes deeply in the power of effective leadership to bring about positive change in the community. His decision to run for office stems from his lifelong commitment to public service and his desire to address the pressing issues facing the residents of Senate District 35.
Having spent years serving in various capacities within education, community organizations, and the Democratic Party, Dr. Floyd has witnessed firsthand the challenges and opportunities facing Senate District 35. He understands the importance of strong and principled leadership in addressing issues such as education, economic development, healthcare, and social justice.
Dr. Floyd is running for Senate District 35 because he believes that the district deserves a leader who will listen to the concerns of constituents, advocate for their interests, and work tirelessly to improve their quality of life. He is committed to being a voice for all residents of Senate District 35 and to fighting for policies and initiatives that promote access, equity, and opportunity for all.
